Topic: High Reach Training

High reach demolition excavators (UHD) have been a common sight on European demolition sites for two decades or more.   While I know the UK's National Federation of Demolition Contractors created a set of guidance notes, I am not aware of any high reach specific training courses.
Isn't it about time the demolition industry set in place a universally agreed training course for the use of these highly specialised (and potentially hazardous) machines?

Re: High Reach Training

Watch this space as NFDC are currently in discussion with me and others about a High reach training course. I am also working on a simulator programme to assist with that training.

Re: High Reach Training

Things are moving on with high reach training both here and across Europe as you can see from the first-ever edition of Euro Demolition News here: http://www.demolitionnews.com/2010/06/0 … tion-news/

Re: High Reach Training

"Machine Drivers are born. They are not created."
In this I agree that machine operators are a special breed and are not just created with some training.

"Either you have the aptitude and fear nothing or you don't have it and a thousand training courses wont change that."
This bit I somewhat agree with as I dont believe any really good machine operator is fearless, its the ones that are fearless that bring things down on top of themselves as they dont stop to think about what happens next if I pull this bit!

"The likes of Brunell and Dibhner would be turning in their graves at what your talking about."
Dont you think that times have moved on somewhat from their time? Modern developments mean that many of the methods used by people like Fred are no longer needed and in all that Fred did he was always as safe as he could be.

"You seem to think you can turn a dog into a cat"
No but you can change the uneducated into educated

"Have any of you ever been on these expensive training courses?"
Yes and if you choose the right ones with the right people running them for the right reasons then they can be very beneficial.

"A retard could pass them in his sleep."
I take it you qualified then?

Re: High Reach Training

Oooh, things are hotting up in here, aren't they!!

Re: High Reach Training

Dig it down is spot on, there are machine drivers and there are machine operators!!

Re: High Reach Training

In reply to the recent posts by Mr Dig it Down, I would like to add a few thoughts. Firstly the CPCS and CITB card schemes are an excellent way of bringing a minimum standard of competence to the workplace especially on or around machinery. If you took the time to realise it, when you go for an interview the man with the tickets will most likely get the job over the LOUDMOUTH without them. The cards dont represent anyone as an expert but do tell an employer that the cardholder is competent. And as for the quote that you can master a Highreach machine in around 45 minutes you are talking out of your ar**. I have and still do operate all demolition machines from very small to really really big stuff and I am still learning everyday after 20yrs.If you were worth your metal you would realise that a well trained man is extremely employable, with this employment comes the experience....dont keep knocking it try it you donut.

Re: High Reach Training

Dig it you just make me sit here and shake my head time after time when I read your posts.

You are obviously one of those dinosaurs who will not accept that the world we now live and work in has changed and it aint changing back again anytime soon so you better get used to it.

All this bull about mastering a high reach in under 60min if we put you on our small high reach machine of 22m you would either still be trying to work out how to get the dipper and knuckle to work, how to stop all the bells and buzzers from whistling or how to put the back end of the machine back on the floor, have seen and heard this bull from so many so called mega experienced plant operators time and time again, just accept its an even more specialist bit of kit which takes years to master not a few minutes making things go back and forth or up and down.

Construction pays less than demo? We wish lol you obviously havent seen the wage bills for qualified supervisors and high reach drivers etc you know those muppets who took all them stupid qualifications lmao.

Wake up to the 21st Century mate.
