Topic: Demolition of composite metal floors

Does anyone have any experience of demolishing/deconstruction steel-framed buildings with composite metal decking welded to the beams?

If so I would like to speak to you.

Thanks

Re: Demolition of composite metal floors

What do you need to know?

Do you want a site manager or someone to give you advice on how to do it, or a contractor??

Some more details on what you actually need would probably get you some good feedback.

Re: Demolition of composite metal floors

Fair point.

I work for the Steel Construction Institute so my interest is more promotional rather than commercial.

We obviously promote this form of construction but are increasingly asked about its end-of-life credentials, i.e. can it be easily deconstructed and the component parts easily recycled or, in the case of the beams, possibly reused.

This technology is relatively new and therefore we have limited experience of demolishing such structures. My post therefore was to seek any experience from demolition contractors particularly concerning separating the steel deck from the concrete and dealing with the through-deck welded studs on the beams.

In short, does this system present any particular benefits or challenges compared to other, more traditional forms of concrete construction.

I look forward to your replies.

Re: Demolition of composite metal floors

Dear Sir
In answer to your question concerning the recycling of steel decking I am not aware of any projects that have been undertaken in recent years.
In fact with the scrap price of steel being so high and the additional labour, plant costs & health and safety issue associated with dismantling works I would very much doubt that any steel sections would be consider economically recoverable for re use.
Even those sections that are consider recoverable present all sort of additional problems such as load testing and certification.
Unfortunately we are fast becoming a recycling industry not a reclamation industry.
