Topic: Extracting a quart from a pint pot?

With the advent of the hydraulic hammer and the variety of crunchers, munchers and pulverisers that followed, the excavator has turned from a humble digging machine to a veritable Swiss Army knife.   But, given our time over again, would we really design things this way again?
We have recently seen a high reach machine and 25 tonne shear attachment sold to Norway to dismantle oil rigs.   It's impressive to watch but, in light of the cost of making this machine and its limited need for mobility, would it have been easier to fix the cutting equipment to a static platform?
And as construction of the world's first 1 kilometre-high building progresses in the Middle east, we already know that a UHD machine will not be capable of dismantling it when it's useful life is over.
So, what are machine manufacturers doing about this?
